Description
Spalted Hackberry shorts are approximately 13/16″-thick x 5-1/2″ to 7-1/2″ wide x 24″ long. They are available in two, and three board foot quantities.
Spalted hackberry is a type of wood known for its unique appearance due to fungal spalting, which creates dark lines and streaks within the wood's light-colored base. This spalting occurs when the hackberry tree's wood is exposed to decay, but the process is stopped before significant rot develops. The resulting wood is visually striking and popular for various woodworking projects.
Spalted hackberry features a light-colored (often yellowish-gray to pale brown) background with intricate black or dark brown lines and streaks caused by spalting fungi.
Hackberry generally machines and turns well, but interlocked grain and knots can pose challenges. It also responds well to steam bending.
