Description
Hard Maple shorts are approximately 13/16″-thick x 5-1/2″ to 7-1/2″ wide x 24″ long. They are available in one, two, and three board foot quantities.
The color, including sapwood, ranges from nearly white to an off-white cream color, sometimes with a reddish or golden hue. The heartwood tends to be a darker reddish brown. It’s hard due to its high density, but it is easy to work with on hand and machine tools. Maple tends to burn when machining with high-speed cutters, such as in a router. It can blotch when staining, so a pre-conditioner, gel stain, or toner may be necessary to get an even color.
